Background

In India, countless citizens are constantly on the move. And while mobile numbers, bank accounts, and even income tax liabilities follow each person, the right to vote, a constitutional right, does not. The world’s largest democracy lost 281 million votes in the 2014 National Elections, more than the total voting population of the second-largest democracy, the USA. (Source: Election Commission of India). While the system’s narrative has always been to blame disinterested voters, no one has questioned the system on the fact that no electoral reforms had been introduced to make domestic migrant voting possible. The brief was for The Times of India (TOI), the leader of India’s Fourth Estate, to shine a spotlight and drive change. Our objectives: •Ask citizens to speak up and demand electoral reform that would enable them to vote from anywhere in India. •Platform the citizens’ demand and urge the bureaucracy into action.
