It’s 2020 and the streets are mostly deserted, the nights wrapped in silence. Yet not all is doom and gloom. Rather, many have found this a chance to appreciate the richness of daily life. We wanted to create a way for people to cherish this unique period even after the pandemic fades and we return to our busy lifestyles. Back in the 1200s, the people of Japan enjoyed the custom of reciting poems about everchanging emotions while sipping sake and gazing at the moon’s reflection on the surface of the lake. This custom seems similar to those nights during the corona-virus pandemic when we could not gather with friends or colleagues, which left time for becoming lost in thought while gazing at the moon. We filled this illustration book with sentiments of that time, encouraging readers to recollect and cherish those special moments.
Nights By The Lake Been so long since I broke an egg, the yellow floating in the dish as if melting. I love home. Even more so after a long trip.
The reflected moon and a woman are illustrated in a distorted fashion, allowing the viewer to feel the surface of the lake. Elliptical shapes imply the sake-filled "ochoko" brought to one’s lips while savoring the lake, the mirror images, and the moon.
