The pandemic cancelled all Pride Parades, but we know the fight for equality couldn’t be postponed. So at a time when we were all stuck at home and mass gathering wasn’t allowed, how do you gather a group of allies and supporters to show their Pride and unite for equality?
We turned everyone’s homes into marching grounds for Pride. Introducing Recreate Pride 2020: Pride March From Home. The first-ever online marching platform that let people march together for Pride from the comfort and safety of their homes, simply by using their mobile phones. Created by Facebook, Google, Globe, Pride@Tech, the platform www.marchforpride.com combined geolocation technology, the convenience of mobile, and the unstoppable desire to march for Pride, recreating the Pride March online.
In a conservative country like the Philippines, the LGBTQ+ is one of the most marginalized communities. And in the middle of a pandemic, this marginalization was felt even more — they had no Pride Parade and no safe space to express themselves as most were stuck in unwelcoming homes. What they had was a phone, a lot of time, and an unstoppable desire to march for equality. So we used all this time and all this passion, and turned them into rallying cry to Pride March from home.
We rallied the community to unite at www.marchforpride.com on Pride Day and Pride march from the safety of their homes and their phones. It was easy to do: 1) Set your virtual Pride route 2) Pick a rainbow color 3) Share your march Little did they know that their marches had the power to light up the Philippine map in glorious colors of Pride on Google Maps. And that was exactly what happened on Pride Day. On 27 June 2020, every rainbow route from every person contributed to make the Philippine map on Google light up in a beautiful display of Pride. An illuminated symbol that made it clear: Pride is unstoppable.
The campaign reached over 25M users across platforms. Picked up by local and international publications, with lots of free shoutouts and mentions from high-profile celebrities and influencers. But more importantly, it generated thousands of rainbow marches from over 400 locations, that lit up the Philippine map in beautiful display of Pride, thanks to all the user-generated routes marching a total of 108,421.4 KMS, more than enough to circumnavigate the equator, twice.
