The spread of fake news is a big problem in the Philippines. One factor that affects this is that celebrities are idolized to a point where they aren’t questioned. Any statement with a popular face is almost immediately believed without verification, making it easy to convince citizens to believe false information. To help people become more aware of how easy it is to create fake news, Globe Telecom used the likeness of Jose Mari Chan, a popular singer whose songs have been a part of Philippine Christmases for three decades now. With the holiday season approaching, he informs people about the state of Christmas in 2020. But as it turns out, it’s all fabricated, and the one talking isn’t Jose Mari Chan after all. The film ends with a reminder to be vigilant of the news they see on their feed.
Fake news is widespread in the Philippines. Especially on social media. What trolls usually do is put famous people in their fake statements. Sadly, a lot of Filipinos easily fall for this because they believe those they recognize, and celebrities are idolized to a point where they aren’t questioned. What they don’t realize is that fake news is easy to create and manipulate. So to shed light on the matter, Globe Telecom featured a celebrity unanimous to Christmas—even bigger than Mariah Carey during the holiday season here in the Philippines. His name is Jose Mari Chan. In the film, Jose Mari Chan delivers an unexpected holiday statement, and to remind Filipinos to be vigilant of the news they see on their feed.
