Foxtel built an immersive, 2,000 square metre Westeros-style cemetery in one of Sydney’s most popular public parks, honouring the characters who have died in ‘Game of Thrones’. The public were then invited to come and pay their respects at this ‘Grave of Thrones’. The cemetery, featuring the tombs of more than 35 of the show’s most notorious characters, included two giant one tonne mausoleums and the head of the boy-King, Joffrey. Each grave was layered in reference to their life and death; Hodor’s for example, featured two hands holding a door closed, honouring his final moment in the show. The graves also featured the season and episode the character died and using Foxtel’s mobile streaming service fans could watch that moment over again. A streamable audio-tour provided further information about each tomb and its references, and visitors were prompted to listen to it as they toured this ‘final resting place.’

Game of Thrones is one of the world’s most popular television shows. Its final season (season eight) premiered on April 14th, 2019. During the seven seasons so far, there have been more than 150,000 deaths in the show. In fact, the show has become incredibly famous for how deadly it is, and for how mercilessly it kills off main characters. Fans invest heavily in these characters, knowing that at any moment they might be killed off – which makes for extraordinarily emotional viewing. The internet is rife with fan reaction videos of characters dying on the show - some people weep and sob, others cheer and celebrate, depending on who dies. Most of the well-known characters deaths have been immortalised in popular culture; like Hodor holding the door closed to protect Bran Stark, or Petyr Baelish having his throat slit by Arya Stark.
