Does a child murderer deserve compassion? Told in a series of flashbacks, "Sister" charts the relationship between a catholic nun Sister Gerard and death row inmate Catherine. The film charts Catherine’s journey from a self-loathing wreck to a picture of calm as she makes peace with her fate. Whilst Sister Gerard is her anchor, she is not without her demons, as she is questioned for loving a heinous murderer. "Sister" is based on the iconic ritual murders committed by chief perpetrator Adrian Lim abetted by his “holy wives”. News of the murders rocked the media in the 1980s, and it is still remembered by Singaporeans today. Instead of focusing on Adrian, "Sister" focuses on one of his “holy wives” - Catherine who had been a mere footnote until now.
"Sister" is part of 15 Shorts, an anthology of short films about unsung Singapore heroes to inspire a culture of giving. Based on NVPC's Good Pulse Survey, Singaporeans believe that government, businesses and non-profits play the biggest role in giving back to society. People power is low, hence each film was produced to highlight every individual's capacity to give. The aim is to humanize and for Singaporeans to resonate with the hero of the story, to see “giving” as a relationship, not a transaction. We challenge Singaporeans to show compassion when it's hard to forgive and convey the theme of rehabilitating ex-offenders, rather than just a 'feel good' story. Overall, the contentious issues in "Sister" sparked a high level of debate and went viral within the Catholic community during its initial release. We successfully fund-raised ten times more for a local charity focused on prisoner rehabilitation.
