The film opens on a schoolyard setting where a lone girl (with one arm) is being bullied by a group of other girls. As they push her she falls backwards, not onto the ground but into a pool of water. We see her raise her hand towards a group of people looking at her (like a freak at an aquarium) and signal ‘stop’ – defining the moment she decided to take a stand against those who made her life miserable because of her deformity. We show her in action swimming and then overlooking a group of children both able-bodied and disabled all playing together in harmony. Her story is about more than just winning medals, it’s about inspiring kids from all walks of life to come together without prejudice and to give a voice to other victims of bullying.
Throughout her formative years, the athlete in our film was told she could not, she should not, she would not. But thanks to her dogged determination and refusal to give in to taunts of bullies, she did. All the bullying she faced, only added her resolve to become a para swimming champion for her nation. And while she continues to defy the impossible in the pool, she is also busting stigmas outside the arena. She sees her success in the pool, as a way to bring attention to her cause.
