Graphic Trial is a printed poster exhibition sponsored by one of the Japanese top printing company TOPPAN PRINTING CO., LTD. The exhibition has been held annually since 2006 and every year Toppan and top creators came together to explore ways of creating a new approach to printing. The exhibition is aimed for the Japanese graphic designers who have strong senses to express their idea with printing, to work on the designs with freer minds and ultimately to improve the quality of the industry as a whole.
This year, we set our theme as “Iron and Torque”. Immaculately arranged bolts are tightened accurately by torque – they are used in the precise machineries and even on rockets, and furthermore, there is a beauty in their unsophisticated shapes. Using ink mixed with iron and polarized pearl pigment glaring like an oil, we applied the inks in layers to create the aging effect.
What supported Japan’s high economic growth was the metal parts elaborately crafted by the small factories in Japan. The parts’ performance even made rockets possible to fly. Paying attention to inconspicuous bottles and nuts – this is the eyes to discover the design. We wanted to realize the innovative graphic design with the power of printing that allow us to express freshly and boldly.
Graphic Trial marks its 13th year and it has been attracting high attentions of designers from all over Japan. Not only being covered by the press, it has attracted the eyes of educational fields like universities where young designers are currently studying, and with their request, the exhibition has been travelling across the country.
