This film was developed to help launch R.M. Williams in several global markets, as well as develop the brand further in Australia. While R.M. Williams has always been known as the workman's boot and has been tied to sweeping vistas of the Australian outback, R.M. Williams is not a boot for a singular environment. They’re a boot for singular people, people with character. The overriding premise of this commercial is about ‘Undeniable Character’, it’s also about one’s journey and how we move through this thing called life. What we do and how we use this journey is inevitably what defines our character.
Largely, due to how we wanted to show the journey the cinematography needed to be simple but at the same time tactile. Each scenario was given a predetermined colour pallet so the contrast between each shot was accentuated. We decided to implement the use of a 16mm film camera along with the Arri Alexa. This 16mm footage is used throughout the piece not only to add another element but to add to the energy and pace of the piece. By combining the 16mm and Arri footage it allowed us to play with glitches in the edit so the transitions and match cuts felt more purposeful.
