Brief Explanation

Lamb Side Story is an all singing, all dancing Broadway musical extraordinaire. With a take on West Side Story, ‘Lamb Side Story’ builds on the brand’s long-founded principle of unity and inclusion and attempts to bring people together over a summer lamb barbecue. Diverse political opinions and views are set head to head in the satirical ad, but togetherness prevails. The spot pitches the left and right wing factions against each other and tackles political issues such as global warming, gay marriage, gender diversity, LGBTQI issues, religion, equal rights and more, recognising that there are diverse opinions, and that’s ok.

Execution

It’s a spectacularly modern Australian take on West Side Story in terms of the music, choreography and visual language, with an enormous sense of theatre and scale. The choreography was an important element for this campaign, a sort of mix of ballet and modern dance, while also being outrageously humorous. The left and right wing have differing colour palettes and styles when it comes to wardrobe to help identify their difference in opinion, creating a vibrant celebration of colour. Casting dramatically enhanced the overall spot, having two very charismatic leaders for each group and their followers. They are expressive, animated faces. The camera movements utilise specific tracks, whip pans and crash zooms, to infuse a sort of overwrought intensity to the goings on, enhancing the overall opposing nature of the spot.
