The Campaign

Nike uses technology to bring elite training mothods to the masses. Nike created “Rise Academy” which is a basketball training platform where anyone can sign up to get elite coaching. Every session is conducted by professional coaches on 3 courts in Beijing,Shanghai and Guangzhou. Each court is rigged with video cameras to capture entire training sessions in multiple angles so that you can review your performance with your coach in detail. Coaches assess players in real time via an iPad app to review performance and 4 automated cameras installed on the court records every move, shot and pass during class and pushes footage to mobile devices sessions end. For players, the service seamlessly integrates their Nike and WeChat accounts, making it easy for them to receive assessments and video footage. Within this experience users can crop, tag, compare and share video highlights to the coach for 1on1 feedback and advice.

Creative Execution

The pilot execution spanned across 6 months in 3 major cities in China. Cameras were strategically placed around the outdoor courts to ensure that every angle is covered. Computers were also installed and attached to cameras on-site to process and make the footage immediately available after each Rise training session. The modular system included customized camera recording engines, video footage processing scripts, WeChat front-end experiences and backend integration (with camera recording systems). It was also weather waterproof. The system was implemented and piloted pre-deployed on one court for testing and refinement. After three months of prototyping, a modular solution was implemented that is flexible and future-proof enough to cater for additional courts and cities.

During the pilot period in the first 6 months of launching, Rise Academy classes have become one of the most sought after membership services in Nike with registration spots being completely booked out each week. To date over 350 professional training classes have been served to over 1500 members registered to the program. And the experience is being scaled up for 2018.

The students who attend Rise academy comprise of players of all ages from as young as 14 to mid 30’s located in the 3 main cities of Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. Awareness of the classes are distributed through Nike’s official social account as well word of mouth from participating players.
