The film showcases India’s top badminton player Saina Nehwal playing against multiple opponents. Except the opponents are not professional players but are in fact the disbelievers from her past who felt that badminton was not for her and that she would never amount to anything. As she overcomes these proverbial demons she says that nothing can hurt a child more than to tell him / her that they will not amount to anything. Thankfully for all other injuries there is Savlon.
The director wanted to recreate the drama and intensity of Saina Nehwal battling her disbelievers in a way that was believable but also with a subtle esoteric touch. He achieves this through a masterful play of cinematography, edit and sound design. For example, each time we go to a wide shot of an empty stadium with Saina playing against her disbelievers, the viewer is left with a surreal feeling. The shadows and the void of the large stadium represent her doubts and fears. But when we cut to the close ups of the game, it jerks the viewer back to reality and puts him / her in the thick of the battle. Similarly, with the sound design, by using a combination of real game sounds and symbolic sounds like fluttering of birds and a soft chant, the director weaves an audio base that is as compelling as the film’s visuals.
