Wasting energy is still the biggest threat to our planet. And yet most of us still leave our computers on when we pop away from our desks. For example, when taking a toilet break. Even with autosleep, this behaviour wastes far too much energy. To help reduce energy waste, our task was to change people’s behaviour.
Our task was to change people’s behaviour. But based on the insight that people simply don’t change overnight, our solution required no change in behaviour whatsoever. In other words, ECO:Screen makes it easy for us to become ‘Friends of the Earth’.
We created ECO:Screen. Using standard Bluetooth technology, this simple app ‘pairs’ your computer to something we already have in our pockets…our mobile phones. It then works as a proximity sensor to detect when we’re in range—switching our computers on and off only as we need them. Targeting people and companies, ECO:Screen does more than just put our computers to sleep. It allows our planet to rest easy too. And that makes us Friends of the Earth. The campaign aimed for 10,000 downloads and to save 1 million hours of unnecessary energy waste.
In the first month alone, ECO:Screen was downloaded by people and companies over 22,000 times—that’s once every two minutes. In that time alone, it’s already saved almost 2 million hours of unnecessary energy waste.
