During Vesak, Buddhism’s most revered celebration, SolarTherm, to show Sri Lankans the incredible potential of solar energy, built the world’s first solar powered Pandol, a large, brightly-lit traditional display that shares a lesson from the Buddha’s teachings.
Sri Lanka’s power supply is heavily dependent on fossil fuels and a steep rise in the cost of electricity in May 2013 brought protests. SolarTherm, the country’s leading solar cell provider, wanted to use this moment to show people the potential of solar power. To do this it built the world’s first solar powered Pandol, a traditional Buddhist display enhanced by dramatic lighting that shares a lesson from the Buddha’s teachings. Unveiled during Buddhism’s most revered day, the SolarTherm Pandol demonstrated to Sri Lankans that their own cultural heritage and the power of solar energy could light the way forward.
