Amendment request: The script called for dramatic visual journey around the XV, which meant extreme camera moves and full 360 sweeps. All of this was created in a large soundstage with enormous 2 story high green screen sets, a purpose built garage plus an additional outdoor location for a specific snow boarding moment in the commercial. BMX Riders flipped tricks against a 140 feet green screen whilst a techno crane moved along 200 feet of track at high speed in order to catch all the action. The snow boarder was filmed on a synthetic snow surface placed on a grassy hill that with a jump placed half way down. The final location was selected because the slope of the hill matched the same angle as the front windscreen of the XV. During the post process, a CGI snow surface was composited into the windscreen and simulations of snow being carved from the snow board were added. The Skate Cycle action was achieved by lowering the rider suspended from the roof onto a 3 metre purpose built treadmill against green screen. The camera moved at a rapid pace around the rider to match the perspective of the car underneath him. A multi story high set was needed to shoot the trail runners sprinting down the rear windscreen. The large green screen construction was built to match the angles of the windscreen and spoiler. The actors dodged imaginary logs and swerved around corners on the run down. In post a matte painting was created of a forest track complete with rocks rolling down and the odd puff of dust to finish it off. The kitesurfer was filmed against green screen whilst suspended from the roof with wires. To achieve all the angles in one smooth shot, he was lifted several metres up in the air whilst the camera flew underneath and around him. The shot was finished off nicely with a computer generated ocean and spray of water flying off the board. The boulderers were filmed against a 5 metre high wall covered with a reflective chrome surface. Hand grabs were placed at points which match the positioning of the XV logo. The camera move was motion tracked in post production and a CGI "XV" badge was created and the actors were composited back over the top. The XV was filmed in a purpose built garage with the use of a motion control camera system. The camera move was split into 2 parts in order to move around the the entire car. Multiple passes were shot and then combined in post production to achieve a beautiful and seamless result. In all scenes, additional lighting effects and simulations such as leaves, snow, dust, rocks and water spray were added to complete the scenes.
Sports featured TVC spot, SUBARU XV requires a mountain of creative and technical challenges, including the need to be millimetre perfect from pre-vis to shoot, right through to the finished product. The result is a stunning spot that features extreme sportsmen plying their craft on the surface of the Subaru XV. BMX riders flip tricks on the car’s tyres, they are shot on a flat green board. We create the slope angle by camera movement. Snowboarders carve their way down the snow bound windscreen. He is shot in an outside slope much to the windscreen angle. kitesurfers draw deep lines on the water filled rear screen and then launch into the sky. He was suspended in the air and again the camera created his dynamic movement. This spot is notable for the necessary merger of production and post-production: given the close relationship between talent action, car footage and CG elements, a seamless workflow and visionary approach that recognised this challenge was required from the very outset. It is reasonable post production handled the Pre-Vis build, shoot, on set compositing and offline. Additionally, they delivered 3D components and created simulations such as the snow, water and splashes.
