Brief Explanation

Set in a floating crystal world, China's young Olympic team appears as animated superheros before a roaring crowd. They size up their surroundings as they prepare to take on the London 2012 Games. As the games begin a beautiful princess appears and challenges them to claim a Pepsi prize. She manipulates the world's water and ice - throwing obstacles in their way - but they skillfully work together to propel one member within reach of the Pepsi. Just as he's about to win the game the world quickly transforms around him. We now see He Chong, China's star Olympic diver, waking up from a dream while on an airplane. He's with his team mates on their way to the London Olympics, and the princess from his dream looks just like the flight attendant offering him more Pepsi. He's at a loss for words but drinks his Pepsi with the feeling that he's already won even before reaching London. There's a strong sense of pride from China and the Chinese people around the world. They share their achievements and victories and believe that team efforts are just as important as facing a challenge alone.

Creative Execution

The animation was achieved by creating CG models for the characters and environments, and then textured and lit to have a painterly quality. This look gave the characters a hand drawn feel while maintaining a sense of dimensionality and depth in the environment. Instead of using a particle based 3D effect we opted for 2D cel animated effects, using them on top of the CG passes. This way, we combined the 2D and 3D looks and expanded our design style. For example, the water waves were created using a 3D liquid simulation that had 2D hand drawn water splashes, ripples and foam. Each were drawn frame by frame. The background mountains and skies were created using 2D matte paintings that were placed on cards in a 3D scene.
