Brief Explanation

When roughly 65 million Filipinos live on US$2 per day1, something as simple as enjoying food and owning a pair of shoes is already considered a luxury. Hating Kapatid is a story about two siblings, Niño and Jose, who own and share a single pair of worn down shoes. Their daily routine consists of Niño using the shoes to go to school in the morning, while Jose sells vegetables in the streets to earn a living. Midday, they meet up in Ms. Perla’s rundown food stall to switch shoes and duties for the day. Ms. Perla who is witness to this daily routine seeks to give them comfort by giving them SO LUCKY soda crackers when they meet during midday. She knows of their difficult situation in life --- already without a mother, and with a sickly and unemployed father. Despite her limited resources, Ms. Perla decides to use all her savings to buy them each their own pair of new shoes, SO LUCKY soda crackers, and a simple Christmas dinner they can enjoy with their father. This unexpected simple act of kindness allows the two boys to finally believe in the spirit of Christmas.
