Make Lamb, Not Walls was created as a biting and humorous commentary on Australia’s unprecedented state division. Set in a not-so-distant dystopian future, where everyday life has been divided by a giant concrete wall. The campaign took satirical aim at the bickering state premiers, urging everyone to tear down the walls and come back together over a BBQ - reigniting Australia’s love of lamb.
Australians are normally free to move between the 8 states without restrictions. In 2020 that all changed. Bickering state premiers slammed shut their borders separating friends, families and entire communities. Their lockdowns are going further than any country in the world. The ‘state border wars', as the media dubbed them, denied 25 million Australians freedom of movement in their own country. Australia’s love for lamb has waned recently, challenged by premium pricing and a lack of convenience. Throw in the most divided year in Aussie history, where coming together over a lamb BBQ was at times impossible. Our challenge of ‘renewing Australia's love of lamb as the meat to share’ was harder than ever. We needed something bold to reverse the decline in penetration and increase sales by 5%.
This was an ambitious job to create in the middle of the pandemic. With restrictions escalating in Sydney, this shoot was centred around regional NSW. All the tools of remote production, testing, and social distancing were used to create this epic work. Rules changed such that the main celebrity talent, Sam Kekovich, was unable to board his flight from Melbourne to Sydney, and as such, a green screen shoot with a body double was constructed to accommodate this last minute change. Many shots were pushed to our own internal post production team to bring to life scenes that were not possible to film with restrictions, such as crowd duplication, replication, and creation. Amongst all of these conditions, often changing daily, the director had to adjust but maintain his overall vision, ensuring the tone and comedy landed, despite constant legal changes and production challenges. A massive undertaking, and one we are all proud of for the awards it has garnered worldwide.
