Every day, commercial trawlers in Sydney’s Hawkesbury River catch enough fish to fill the Sydney Opera House. Keep Australia Fishing - the national organisation representing Australia’s recreational fishing community - wanted to ban unsustainable commercial netting in NSW estuary systems. We created an elaborate underwater rig that resembled fish, so that our message would be picked up on the trawler’s sonar on their way to the fishing grounds. 1. A rig that resembled fish was installed 12m underwater along the main fishing channels of the Hawkesbury River. 2. On their way to the fishing grounds, trawlers would detect our message with their fishfinders. 3. Recreational fishermen then helped us take an image of the stunt to the rest of Australia, putting pressure on NSW politicians to act.
